Istanbul is one of the few cities on earth where you can walk from a Byzantine basilica to an Ottoman palace to a trendy rooftop bar — all within an afternoon. This route takes you through the heart of the old city and down to the water's edge.
The Route at a Glance
This walk covers approximately 6 km and takes around 3–4 hours at a relaxed pace with stops. It is best started in the morning before the crowds arrive at Sultanahmet.
Station 1: Sultanahmet Square
Begin at the heart of historic Istanbul. The square sits between two architectural giants — the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. Arrive before 9 AM to beat the tour groups. Look down at the ground to spot the remains of the ancient Hippodrome, where chariot races once drew tens of thousands of spectators.
Tip: Visit the Hagia Sophia early. Entry queues grow quickly after 10 AM.
Station 2: The Grand Bazaar
A five-minute walk northwest brings you to the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı), one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets. With over 4,000 shops spread across 61 streets, it is easy to get pleasantly lost. Look for the hand-painted ceramics, copper lanterns, and the distinctive Turkish evil eye amulets.
Tip: Prices are negotiable almost everywhere. A warm smile and a cup of çay (tea) offered by shopkeepers are all part of the experience.
Station 3: Süleymaniye Mosque
Climb the hill behind the bazaar to reach the Süleymaniye Mosque, arguably the most beautiful mosque in Istanbul. Built in the 1550s by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan for Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, it commands sweeping views over the Golden Horn. The gardens are a perfect spot for a quiet rest.
Station 4: Eminönü Waterfront
Descend to the waterfront at Eminönü. The smell of grilled fish sandwiches (balık ekmek) from the rocking boats is impossible to resist. Buy one, lean on the railing, and watch the ferries cross the Bosphorus while seagulls wheel overhead.
Station 5: Galata Bridge and Tower
Cross the Galata Bridge — lined with fishermen at almost any hour — and climb the hill to the Galata Tower. Built by the Genoese in 1348, the tower offers a 360-degree panorama of Istanbul's two continents. The neighborhood around the base, Karaköy, has become one of the city's most creative districts, full of independent coffee shops and design studios.
